Niccolò Paganini – Cantabile for violin and guitar

Niccolò Paganini (1782–1840) is a legendary figure in the history of music. His extraordinary violin skills, often considered superhuman, earned him fame as one of the greatest virtuosos of his time. Although Paganini is primarily associated with his technically impressive capriccios, Cantabile for violin and guitar reveals another side of his work—lyrical, subtle, and emotive.

Cantabile, written around 1823, was conceived for the more intimate context characteristic of 19th-century salon music. Paganini, also a gifted guitarist, enjoyed composing for violin and guitar, creating a rich repertoire for this combination of instruments.

The title "Cantabile" itself suggests the songfulness and melodic quality that dominate this work. The violin leads a cantilena, which reveals the influence of the Italian bel canto tradition. The guitar complements the melodic line, creating an atmosphere of melancholic tranquility.

This performance of Cantabile for violin and guitar offers an opportunity to discover a more subtle side of Paganini's work. This miniature reflects the Italian passion for beautiful melody and chamber simplicity.
